Booo.... Pizza Fusion on Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest closed, but I must say.... I wish that it was still open now that I am pregnant. Ever since we found out that we were having a baby, I had stopped eating foods that contain sodium nitrites, like bacon, sausage, pastrami, and... pepperoni, my favorite ingredient on pizza.
Pizza Fusion serves 100% certified organic tomato sauce, fresh vegetables, and hormone (preservative, pesticide and nitrite) free meats on their pizza. Oh, and you don't even know how much I have been craving a slice of pepperoni pizza right now!
Ever since the company that I work for practices being sustainable, I do enjoy and embrace organic eating although I do not eat organic foods all the time. However, when I do.... it always is a great experience.
My friend, Arlene, and I met in Hillcrest and we walked to Pizza Fusion for an early dinner on a weekday. The service to seat us was very slow. We noticed only one server working and seemed like there was one guy in the kitchen. We were finally showed to our table and we browsed the menu. Pizza Fusion offers fresh salads and sandwiches in addition to their organic pizzas.
Arlene ordered the Big Kahuna - a Hawaiian style pizza with bacon, organic pineapple, red onion, mozzarella, provolone, and parmesan cheeses. I am totally against pineapple on pizza, but I tried a slice of her personal pan pizza [$9] and it was surprisingly tasty. It was the sweetness of the pineapple with the saltiness of the bacon that I enjoyed. She ordered her Big Kahuna with a gluten free wheat crust.
I created a personal pizza with organic white crust, pepperoni, roasted portabello mushrooms, and roasted garlic [$10]. With a lot of toppings to choose from, I selected the ingredients that I know I would enjoy. My pizza came out piping hot and the fragrance from the roasted garlic was absolutely amazing. The crust was thin, the way I like it. My first impression of my hot pizza was "only four slices of pepperoni??" Well, the pepperoni slices were pretty large, so when I cut the pizza in quarters, it was one per slice. So, not too bad. My creation was delicious and I gave myself a pretend pat on the back.
[organic pizza heaven]
Mmmm, I have not done research to see if there is another pizza joint in San Diego that serves nitrite free pepperoni, but I would love to have a slice from Pizza Fusion again. There is one location left in SD in Temecula, but that is quite a drive from where we live.
See ya, Pizza Fusion - thanks for the organic experience!
